Diet pills fail to live up to promises of weight loss

The Federal Trade Commission fined marketers of the popular over-the-counter diet drugs
millions of dollars for using false advertising practices. The drugs included are Xenadrine EFX,
TrimSpa, CortiSlim and Bayer AG’s One-A-Day WeightSmart.

The government agency, which settled the claims for $25 million, determine that the pills’
manufacturers made weight loss and weight control claims that were not supported by scientific
evidence, such as that the drugs were chemically proven to cause rapid and substantial weight
loss.
