Avoiding Internet Fraud

The Internet has become a virtual marketplace, enabling consumers to conduct various transactions online with the simple click of a button. Unfortunately, shopping and conducting other business online often leaves consumers vulnerable to deceptive or fraudulent business practices. This is especially true given the inherent difficulty of differentiating between legitimate and illegitimate e-commerce businesses. In fact, illegitimate businesses depend on their very ability to present schemes in ways that appear to be legitimate.

Don’t be a victim of illegal online business practices. The following are some guidelines for avoiding Internet fraud:

  • Do your homework – Make sure that the company you’re dealing with is legitimate. Find out if the company is affiliated with any regulatory programs. Check to see if complaints have been filed against it with the Better Business Bureau. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Be clear on what you’re purchasing – You should have accurate information on any service or good you are buying. Don’t purchase anything without clearing up any questions you have. Make sure to read the fine print.
  • Do you understand the conditions of the sale? – Before completing any online sale, find out all the conditions of the sale, including the nature of the sale (refundable or final), an itemized list of costs involved, terms of delivery or performance, restrictions or limitations, and required type/method of payment.
  • Read the website’s privacy policy – Do not provide any personal or financial information to a website without first reading the site’s privacy policy, and do not patronize any online business that does not post one.
  • Is your browser secure? - A secure browser will encrypt your personal and financial information during transmission. You can usually determine the security of a website transaction by looking for the “lock” icon.
  • Is the company “consumer-friendly”? - In other words, does the company expressly state a commitment to customer satisfaction? Is it committed to resolving complaints or other difficulties fairly and easily?
  • Keep a copy of your online transaction – Legitimate businesses usually provide consumers with the opportunity to print or save a record of the transaction.

Remember that as a consumer, you have legal rights. The Federal Trade Commission website is a good source of information on consumer rights. If you have been the victim of Internet fraud, you should file a complaint with the FTC or other consumer-reporting agency immediately.

You may also wish to speak with a qualified attorney who can evaluate your claim and help you understand your legal rights. You may be eligible to seek compensation through a consumer fraud lawsuit. Please contact us today to confer with one of our experienced consumer fraud attorneys.
