A settlement was recently reached in the class-action suit brought against airborne, the herbal supplement company that claims they help fight off colds.
The suit was filed against the company for false advertising and has been settled for $23.3 million.
Company Accused of False Advertising
“There’s no credible evidence that what’s in Airborne can prevent colds or protect you from a germy environment,” explains David Schardt, a Senior nutritionist for the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI).
The CSPI, which is a non-profit advocacy group, has reported that the company will refund money to all consumers who have purchased Airborne.
“Airborne is basically an overpriced, run-of-the-mill vitamin pill that’s been cleverly, but deceptively marketed,” says Schardt.
Airborne Sued by Consumer
According to reports, this is not the first time that Airborne has been under fire for its false advertising.
In 2006, the company was sued by a consumer because of the deception of their advertising campaign.
The suit followed an ABC news report that the company’s clinical trials were not conducted by doctors, but by two laypeople.
In 2007, the Federal Trade Commission began an ongoing investigation of the supplement, which led to this ultimate settlement.
