Class Action Lawsuit Filed Against AT&T Over Hidden Fees

<< Back to News

In a new class action consumer fraud lawsuit, AT&T (Illinois Bell Telephone Company) is accused of charging hidden fees for connecting local calls through directory assistance.

The lawsuit, which was filed in late December, claims that the phone company charged 12 cents per minute on local calls connected by a directory assistance operator even though customers were told they would be connected for free.

“Illinois Bell Telephone Company customers using directory assistance to obtain local toll numbers are specifically informed that he or she would be connected ‘at no charge' when offered the option to immediately connect to the recently obtained local number,” the complaint said.

According to the complaint, the 12 cent per minute fee was in addition to the standard $1.25 charge for using the directory assistance service. The lawsuit charges the company with violations of the state's Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act.

Members of the class action are each seeking damages of less than $74,999.
