Online Store Offers Stolen Credit Cards

<< Back to News

An online store trading the details of some 500,000 stolen credit cards is available to fraudsters around the world, according to RSA, the computer security division of the Internet technology company EMC. Each card is sold for $2 to $5, and the website offering the cards claims that 97%–100% of the cards are valid.

How It Works

The stolen information is usually exchanged in underground chat rooms. The website where the information is sold functions the same way as any other e-commerce site, offering visitors the opportunity to

  • sign up to the site with anonymous enrollment
  • select credit cards according to the card type and the country where the card was issued
  • add the card order to a "shopping cart"
  • pay for the cards with an e-currency transfer that is deleted from the user's account
  • get a link to a text file with the credit card information

All Kinds of Cards Available

The countries from which the compromised credit cards were stolen include the U.S. the U.K., Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland, and Sweden. According to RSA's anti-fraud center, the website is updated four to five times per day, and it offers to replace any invalid cards free of charge.
