Thirty-four states filed a consumer fraud lawsuit that month against seven global memory chip manufacturers, alleging the companies overcharged their customers by price fixing.
This civil suit stems from a 2002 criminal case in which these companies were charged with conspiring to fix the prices of their dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip, commonly used in computers, cells phones, printers, and digital cameras. The four-year-long investigation has led to several prison sentences and $730 million in fines for several of the companies.
The recent consumer fraud lawsuit, filed in the San Francisco federal district court, claims the chip manufacturers plotted to fix prices and control supply between 1998 and 2002, which resulted in consumers and equipment makers to be significantly overcharged for the product.
It is estimated that consumers may have paid hundreds of millions of dollars extra for the memory chips due to the fixed pricing.
The lawsuit, which involved 34 states, names eight defendants including Infineon Technologies, Hynix Semiconductor, Nanya Technology, Micron Technology, and others.
