Class Action Over Defective Jeep Brakes Settled

<< Back to News

A complicated class action lawsuit – part consumer fraud, part product liability – against DaimlerChrysler Corp. over defective brakes on its Jeep Grand Cherokees has been settled for $14.5 million.

The lawsuit involved more than 1.2 million consumers who had purchased or leased a Grand Cherokee from model years 1999 to 2004. According to the complaint, the Jeeps had various brake defects, which caused pulsation and in some cases brake failure.

Warranty claims about the brakes were allegedly denied by the carmaker.

Approximately $12 million of the settlement will go toward reimbursing consumers who had purchased or leased a 1999 to 2002 model vehicle and were forced to repair or replace the defective brakes during the warranty period.

The remainder of the settlement will be reserved for covering the cost of brake inspections and repairs on 2003 and 2004 models. Consumers who leased or purchased one of these models and contacted DaimlerChrysler about the pulsation while under warranty will receive a free inspection and repair if necessary.

Other consumers who bought or leased a 2003 or 2004 model Jeep Grand Cherokee will get a free inspection only if the brakes are pulsating and a free repair if the vehicle is still under warranty.
