Cloned Vehicles Sold to Consumers

<< Back to News

According to law enforcement officials, car cloning is becoming more common in the U.S.

Advanced technology is making it easier for thieves to steal a car’s identity and create realistic VIN plates and car titles.

Consumers Being Tricked

Four years after Toni McKnight bought her Mitsubishi Eclipse, she discovered that the vehicle was a clone.

The car had been stolen only weeks before McKnight purchased it at a Southern Florida dealership.

She discovered that she was a victim of auto fraud when police took the vehicle from her home and has since filed a suit against the dealership in an attempt to get her money back.

Cloning Operations in the U.S.

Cloning operations typically target high-end models that will bring in a good sale and are becoming common throughout the country.

The state of Florida reportedly ranked third nationally in auto thefts with 76, 437 cases last year.

Police officials say that it’s near impossible for consumers to detect whether or not their vehicle has been stolen.

“When the police told me the car was stolen, I thought they had made a mistake,” said McKnight.
