Class Action Lawsuit Targets Debt Collection Agency

<< Back to News

A debt collection agency accused of violating consumer rights is being targeted in a class action lawsuit filed on behalf of a Florida woman and others across the country who have been victimized by the company's illegal practices.

According to the lawsuit filed on May 3, North Shore Agency of New York violated the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Florida's Consumer Collection Protection Act by using threatening letters to coerce consumers to pay for non-existent debt.

The complaint claims that consumers were being billed for magazine subscriptions they didn't want and were sent intimidating letters from North Shore when they would refuse to pay. North Shore's letters failed to inform consumers—as required by law—how to challenge the validity of the debt, the suit states.

“We have received hundreds of complaints from consumers around the country regarding North Shore Agency's collection practices,” said attorney Jesse Ray.

A “pattern of complaints” against the agency has also been reported to the New York Better Business Bureau.
