As credit tightens and foreclosures mount in San Diego, more and more cases of foreclosure fraud are being reported to the Legal Aid Society of San Diego.
Desperate homeowners are increasingly falling prey to conniving opportunists who tell them that they can help save their properties, only to leave families broke and without a home.
Agency Becomes Overwhelmed with Fraud Cases
Attorneys working for the Legal Aid Society of San Diego say that just within the past couple of months, over 50 cases regarding possible fraud have been brought before them.
The agency has reportedly become so overwhelmed that they are now seeking funds to open a specialized foreclosure unit.
The San Diego County District Attorney's Office also reports that they've seen a sudden spike in complaints from local residents about possible fraud.
“We are concerned about it, and we're trying to get the word out to legal aid societies and other groups that deal with housing issues to see if they're having problems,” explains Senior Assistant Attorney General Al Sheldon.
Woman Gets Kicked Out of Home
Sandra Barranon, a resident of Potrero, trusted First Gov, a foreclosure consulting firm, after they contacted her promising to help her restructure the debt on her house.
However, weeks later she discovered her home had been sold in a courthouse auction when the new owner knocked on her door, informing Barranon that her and her children had two weeks to vacate.
Barranon, who had recently lost her job, reportedly paid First Gov $2,000 to help her.
“I feel so stupid because I never felt people could actually do this to me,” says Barranon, who is a single mother. “ I have always been a good person.”
