Identity Theft and Consumer Fraud on the Rise

<< Back to News

Identity theft and consumer fraud have reportedly become one of the nation’s fastest growing crimes.

The police department in Portsmouth recently collaborated with the New Hampshire Attorney General’s office to hold a seminar on identity theft and fraud.

Residents of Portsmouth Discuss Fraud

The seminar, headed by consumer affairs specialist Harold Moldoff, spoke to residents about identity theft, mail, telemarketing and internet fraud and discussed the various ways in which they can protect themselves from these forms of theft and fraud.

Moldoff explained that the best way to protect yourself from fraud is to report cases as soon as they happen.

He also stated that the elderly are particularly at risk seeing as they generally have savings, are at home frequently, and may not hang up the phone as quickly as a younger person might.

“The elderly are either too embarrassed to fess up or they’re nervous that they will be placed in a home by one of their relatives,” Moldoff explained.

America Under Siege

More than 9.3 million Americans have reportedly been the victims of some form of identity theft within the last 12 months.

International sweepstakes and charitable solicitations are among the most used forms of fraud that Americans are falling victim to.

“If somebody wants to steal your identity, they’re going to get it somehow or another,” said Moldoff.
