An Arkansas state judge has approved a $90 million settlement reached by Google Inc. and members of a high-profile class action lawsuit that alleged the multi-billion dollar search engine company engaged in click fraud practices.
Google will pay $60 million to advertisers affected by the click fraud as far back as 2002. About $30 million will go to pay attorneys' fees.
The class action lawsuit against Google and other search engine companies highlights the increasing problem of Internet click fraud, which takes advantage of how search engines serve advertisements on their Web sites.
Every advertiser is charged a fee, ranging from a few cents to a few thousand dollars, every time one of their Pay Per Click (PPC) adds gets clicked. Click fraud occurs when an advertisement is clicked by someone in bad faith—either by a person clicking for financial gain or to force the business placing the ad to incur a lot of extra fees.
Judge Joe Griffin's settlement approval means it is the end of Google's participation in the lawsuit, which was filed more than a year ago by Arkansas companies and Internet advertisers. However, the class action that now represents tens of thousands of Google advertisers will continue.
Currently, about 51 people objected to the settlement and may pursue their own separate legal claim against the Google.
