However, the number they were dialing was allegedly leading them to two half brothers who were scamming callers out of money by posing as legal aids.
Brothers Pose as Legal Aids
Starting in 2006, two brothers, who referred to themselves as Brown and White, operated companies that “exploited confusion over the term legal aid,” according to the attorney general.
Documents reveal that the two men began their scam in Colorado and continued to prey on unknowing consumers in other states, including Florida and Nevada.
The History of a Legal Aid
Authentic legal aids began working in the late 1800’s and focused on helping low-income people have access to lawyers that they would otherwise not be able to afford.
However, under Mr.White’s operations, this company collected fees from clients without doing any work in return.
The men also allegedly charged large deposits that were typically nonrefundable.
Scam Artists Caught
“The defendants preyed upon lower-income consumers with confusing business names and false promises,” explains Attorney General John W. Suthers.
The two men, who were caught by authorities in the midst of their illegal operations, now face civil penalties and restitution to victims.
