Maryland Rentals Accused of False Advertising

<< Back to News

The Attorney General of Maryland, Douglas F. Gansler, recently announced that the Consumer Protection Division is charging Maryland Rentals, LLC, and the owner of the company, Wanda Monroe, with deceptive trade practices.

Alleged False Advertising

The rental company and its owner are being accused of unfair advertising in connection with their rental listings that were marketed to local residents.

Maryland Rentals allegedly advertised houses for rent in newspapers and magazines in the Baltimore area.

However, when renters contacted the company about the rentals, they discovered that in order to discover more about the rentals, the company was trying to charge them $100 to $150 to become a part of a rental listing service.

According to court documents, the rentals that the company was advertising did not exist.

They were simply used as a tool so customers would call and they could tell them about their rental listing service.

Not the First Time

This is not the first time the Division has been questioned.

This is the third action brought against them in the past three years.

In 2005, Rentco Publishing LLC was shut down for false advertising, and earlier this year U.S. Rental Network was charged by the Division for the same type of fraud.

Compensation

The Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division is hoping the customers who were caused aggravation and harm by the scheme be compensated.

They are also seeking investigation costs and a civil penalty.
