Fraud Lawsuit Filed in New Jersey

<< Back to News

A lawsuit has been filed by the state attorney general's Division of Consumer Affairs against a man who has reportedly been deceiving homeowners.

The suit, filed against a Glouchester County man, is holding him accountable for several fraud related charges.

A Case of Fraud

Samuel E. Goodwin III is being accused of soliciting consumers and persuading them to apply for the release of surplus money from the sheriff's sale of the victim's property following foreclosure.

The suit claims Goodwin posed as an attorney to entice clients into believing he was gaining surplus funds.

Goodwin was supposedly charging the consumers between 15 to 65 percent above the recovered funds.

Going to Great Lengths

According to the complaint, Goodwin orally represented a surplus of funds and gave himself over 80 percent of these funds.

“This is money that the homeowners deserve,” states Attorney General Anne Milgram. “This is a scam artist taking advantage of a mortgage crisis.”

One victim also claims that Goodwin threatened him into applying for the surplus funds.

Lawsuit Compensation

Milgram says that they are seeking complete restitution for the consumers taken advantage of and attorney fees, which they will be able to gain through the Consumer Fraud Act.
