A judge has found that State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. denied a claim without performing an adequate investigation, and must pay a couple $2.5 million in punitive damages.

“This is about corporate arrogance,” said Oklahoma City attorney Jeff Marr. “As Exhibit A, I give you the fact that they have continued the same practice of using biased engineers in the Gulf.
“After you were already in the middle of litigation on a catastrophe in Oklahoma, you went ahead and did it again. Why? Because you are State Farm.”
More Lawsuits Against State Farm
There have been other lawsuits filed against the insurance giant over denied claims from tornado and hurricane victims who have received similar treatment.
There is a similar case scheduled to begin on Jan. 22, 2007, and there has been a class-action lawsuit filed on behalf of people who suffered the same injustice after their homes were torn apart in a 1999 Oklahoma tornado.
But, “A $2.5 million verdict to a $58 billion net-worth company like State Farm is a drop in the bucket,” said Attorney General Jim Hood.
“I was really proud to see the system work. What bothers me is that they will try to drag this out and they can pay these little verdicts, no problem.”
