Company Investigated for Telemarketing Fraud

<< Back to News

Federal investigators have accused a telemarketing company, which has been conducting business nationwide, of defrauding victims of millions of dollars.

Company Under Investigation

The telemarketing company under investigation, Suntasia, is said to have operated under more than a dozen names throughout the years they have been in business.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) claims Suntasia telemarketers cold called consumers offering free trial memberships for their supposed buyers and travel clubs.

The company’s employees would get the customer’s checking account information and charge them every month.

If the customers did not cancel their accounts, Suntasia would automatically continue to take money out monthly, which is referred to as a negative option.

Consumers Victimized

“I have been doing consumer fraud cases for the Federal Trade Commission for 25 years,” explains Steven Baker, “I believe this may well be the biggest telemarketing fraud I’ve ever seen.”

Baker reported that Suntasia would make it hard for consumers to cancel their accounts and millions of victims were entangled in the fraud.

Suntasia Faces Federal Repercussions

Since the start of the investigation, the FTC has placed a restraining order on Suntasia and its six owners.

The company was found operating from at least 15 locations throughout Florida and had more than 800 employees.
