As many as 10 people have recently been taken into custody for tampering with a city college's computer system to change grades and create false degrees for financial gain.
Those included in the computer fraud ring range from teachers and students to school administrators.
Among them, are Touro College's former director of admissions, the former director of the computer center, three former students, and three public school teachers, claim reports.
Computer Tampering Allegations
According to reports, records were both created and altered for at least 50 people by those involved.
The ring allegedly charged customers $3,000 to $25,000 for better grades and for bachelor's and master's degrees.
“One dangerous thing they did was give degrees to physicians' assistants,” says Attorney Robert Morgenthau.
Records found by authorities in the home of defendant Adrique Baron, claim the ring has been operating since at least 2003.
To create the transcripts, the defendants supposedly mimicked legitimate records and simply inserted the name of the customer.
A bagman working for the ring who was identified as “Jimmy Bag” in Baron's phone would then collect money.
Arrests Made
Arrests were made of those involved in the fraud on charges of computer trespass, tampering and adjusting business records.
