According to recent statistics, about 35,000 fake checks are presented to state banks and credit unions each month.
The statistics also show that about half of those are deposited by residents of Utah who then fall victim to some type of fraud scam.
Utah Serves as Target
Reports state that Utah ranks as number one among the states that report consumer fraud problems.
“It's a phenomenal problem,” explains Karen Nelson of Wells Fargo Bank.
The average loss for Utahns who fall victim to some type of consumer fraud scam is reportedly about $6,000.
When you multiply that by the number of victims that have been reported, this means that millions of dollars per month are going to scam artists.
Woman Falls Victim
Lynda Worden, a resident of Utah, met a man on a dating site over the Internet and he reportedly told her that he was in the textile business and asked her to take over his business while he was on a buying trip in Spain.
The man sent her a check for $43,000 and Worden opened an account for the business, using some of her own money, and began sending the man checks upon his request.
However, she later found that he was part of a Nigerian fraud operation and he was using her money, not his, for the nonexistent clients.
Worden ended up losing $6,200.
Forgery of Checks
There has reportedly been a surge of fake checks being used and transferred throughout the banks in Utah recently.
“There is no such thing as a safe check anymore,” says Nelson.
Taking Advantage
Officials say that it's not only gullible consumers that these frauds are taking advantage of, but they're also using the weeks or months between the time a check is deposited to when it comes back as forgery to their advantage.
“If you bank, if you have a checking account, if you work on the Internet, if you are a senior citizen, you are a target,” states Kevin Olsen, director of the Division of Consumer Protection.
