The Federal Trade Commission has outlined a number of rules to govern telemarketing sales practices in order to protect consumers. The federal government created the registry to give consumers some control over telemarketing calls they receive. Individuals who place their name on the registry may still receive some telemarketing calls, but most will be stopped. Those who wish to register may do so by calling toll-free, 1-888-382-1222 (TTY 1-866-290-4236) from the number they would like to register. You can also add yourself to the registry online at www.donotcall.gov. The registry accepts both cell and home phone numbers. The government provides the service for free.
