Nevada Assemblyman Seeks to Battle Fraud

Nevada Assemblyman Marcus Conklin filed a bill that aims to help consumers in Nevada battle consumer fraud. Nevada has ranked among the top 10 most fraudulent states in the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book since 2002.

According to the CSN, Nevada held the record for the highest amount paid per instance of fraud in 2010. The average claim in the state was $3,400.

Fraud involving debt collection is the top complaint for the state in 2010. According to reports, the Division of Health Care Financing and Policy opened more than 500 investigations this fiscal year, and the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation conducted more than 9,000 investigations of employment fraud.

The bill seeks to set up a website where people in Nevada could gather information about consumer fraud. The goal of the site would be to enforce consumer protection laws and compliance by encouraging consumers to report fraud and allow them to check on businesses they are considering doing business with.

According to the CSN, there were 725,087 fraud-related claims reported in 2010. Losses exceeded $1.7 billion. The average amount of each claim is $594.00.

Nevada ranked number three on the list of top 10, behind Colorado and Maryland.
